Waterfalls Decent

Journey from the summit of the Sky Waka gondola, perched at an impressive 2,020 meters above sea level. As you descend along the same path once shaped by ancient lava flows and lahars, you'll be captivated by the breathtaking scenery that unfolds.

From the top of the Sky Waka gondola (2,020m), descend the same path as ancient lava flows & lahars past stunning waterfalls, rugged volcanic terrain & amazing views of the Central Plateau. Follow your feet down the mountain and be amazed by the unreal scenery before being wowed by waterfalls. 1-2 hours descent to the base area. It's important to make sure you are prepared for the alpine environment here at Mt Ruapehu. This is only a summer walk.

What to take

  • Sturdy comfortable shoes or boots
  • Water and wind-proof clothing
  • Warm layers (wool or polypropylene)
  • Food and plenty to drink
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • First aid kit


Know before you go:

  • Remember that this trail is in an alpine environment which means that the weather can change rapidly. Make sure you are packed and dressed appropriately.
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you plan on being home.
  • Know your capabilities. Altitude, climbing and heat can make hikes that much more difficult. During winter, parking along SH48 in Whakapapa Village is limited to 3 hours. Parking is intended for visitors to access short walks, the visitor centre, toilets and local shops, restaurants and cafes.
