In the heart of the North Island, Ruapehu’s two national parks and surrounding countryside provide a beautiful backdrop to many outdoor adventures.
Explore what this beautiful region has to offer as the halfway point between New Zealand's two largest cities, you can drive inland from almost anywhere in the North Island and you’ll end up in Ruapehu. Easily accessible by car, bus or train. To secure some sightseeing snaps, there are spectacular ‘off the beaten track routes into the region that can be discovered via the Forgotten World Highway, Volcanic Loop, and Whanganui River Road.
Your own vehicle gives you the greatest flexibility to explore once you’re here, but there are many local tour and transport options in Ruapehu that provide links between the towns. Public transport consists of scheduled bus services with National companies such as Intercity and Kiwirail's Scenic Northern Explorer train service between Auckland and Wellington three times a week. Keep in mind that during the winter months (June - August) there may be snow and often ice, so drive with caution. If you are accessing a mountain road, tyre chains should be carried and may need to be fitted for the conditions.
