Boasting a number of challenging sections to test both fitness and skill, this grade three to four track is one of the iconic mountain bike rides in New Zealand. It is renowned for its spectacular views of the Tongariro National Park as well as its long and rutted downhills.
The track surfaces are often rutted with gravel and mud, stream crossings and uphills. The spectacular scenery will distract you from the uphill sections, as you travel through the magnificent vistas beside three volcanoes and unspoilt bush. If you're riding the 42 Traverse between 1 December to 30 April then be aware that 4WD vehicle access is open each summer and you may encounter vehicles. For up to date trail information please refer to the Department of Conservation site.
And remember at the finish of the ride in Owhango, do stop at the Old Post Office Lodge's "42 Traverse Selfie-Spot" wall.
