One of the highlights of Colin and Manu's visit was spending time at Boars Nest, where they were welcomed through a mihi whakatau and connected with local rangatahi and community leaders.

The experience centred around sharing stories, learning about the region, and preparing a feast using locally sourced ingredients. Wild game, freshwater delicacies, and seasonal vegetables came together in a traditional hāngī that showcased the unique flavours of Ruapehu.

This was more than a meal. It was an opportunity to experience the values of manaakitanga, community, and connection that are deeply woven into life in the region.

Soak Up the Views at Mt Ruapehu

From the warmth of the hāngī, the journey continued to the dramatic landscapes of Mt Ruapehu.

Take a ride on the Sky Waka gondola and ascend into the alpine environment of Whakapapa Ski Area. Along the way, you'll enjoy panoramic views across one of New Zealand's most spectacular volcanic landscapes.

At the top, enjoy a visit to Knoll Ridge Chalet, New Zealand's highest café, where you can relax with refreshments while taking in breathtaking views across the central North Island.

As part of Tongariro National Park, this area sits within New Zealand's first UNESCO Dual World Heritage Site, recognised for both its outstanding natural features and cultural significance.

Escape to Blue Duck Station

Next, venture into the remote wilderness of Blue Duck Station, a working high-country farm and conservation destination located on the edge of the Whanganui National Park.

Here, Colin and Manu experienced a side of Ruapehu many visitors never see. Surrounded by native bush, rolling farmland, and rugged river valleys, Blue Duck Station offers a genuine off-the-grid experience.

The pair spent time learning about conservation efforts, exploring the landscape, and enjoying locally sourced food prepared in the heart of the countryside. As evening fell, they settled in amongst the peaceful surroundings, proving there's no better place to disconnect and unwind.

Experience Fly Fishing in Taumarunui

From Blue Duck Station, the adventure continued to Taumarunui, where Colin and Manu tried their hand at fly fishing.

The rivers around Ruapehu are renowned for their trout fishing, attracting anglers from throughout New Zealand and around the world.
