Waitonga Falls Track

Offering a return journey of just over 4 kilometers, this track unveils the majestic 39-meter Waitonga Falls, the crown jewel of Tongariro National Park's cascading wonders. As you traverse the well-formed path, you'll be enveloped by the serene beauty of mountain beech and kaikawaka forests, with occasional glimpses of the towering Mount Ruapehu adorning the alpine walkway.

11kms out of Ohakune up the Ohakune Mountain Road sits this gem of a track for all levels of fitness with a return journey of just over 4kms. The 39 m Waitonga Falls is Tongariro National Park’s highest waterfall. The well-formed track passes through mountain beech and kaikawaka forest and stunning views of Mount Ruapehu are enjoyed whilst walking along the alpine walkway. There are some steps to master coming back up from the waterfall but it's well worth the effort. Go to the Department of Conservation for full details.

Know before you go:

  • Remember that this trail is in an alpine environment which means that the weather can change rapidly. Make sure you are packed and dressed appropriately.
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you plan on being home.
  • Know your capabilities. Altitude, climbing and heat can make hikes that much more difficult.
