This is an approximately 20 minutes round trip. Meads Wall can be reached with a brief ten-minute stroll from the base of the Rangatira Chairlift at the Whakapapa ski field. This trail not only unveils a filming location from the Lord of the Rings movie but also presents opportunities for captivating rock climbing adventures.
This is an iconic filming location from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Standing atop this dramatic volcanic rock formation, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Mt Ruapehu and the rugged alpine landscape that brought Middle-earth to life. Rock climbers love Meads Wall for its variety of routes, solid volcanic rock, and the breathtaking views that make every climb an amazing experience.

Remember that this trail is in an alpine environment which means that the weather can change rapidly. Make sure you are packed and dressed appropriately.

Know your capabilities. Altitude, climbing and heat can make hikes that much more difficult. During winter, parking along SH48 in Whakapapa Village is limited to 3 hours. Parking is intended for visitors to access short walks, the visitor centre, toilets and local shops, restaurants and cafes.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is open following the recent wildfire in Tongariro National Park.
Most tracks in the Tongariro National Park will also reopen, with the exception of the Mangatepopo Track, which remains closed along with Oturere Hut. Due to fire damage at the Mangatepopo car park, access to the road end is via shuttle only. Private vehicles cannot enter Mangatepopo Road at this time.
Some smoke/ash may still be around, so those with respiratory conditions should take extra care.
