Ruapehu Sledding and Snow Play

Whether you're yearning to frolic in the snow or engage in spirited snowball battles, our winter slopes are primed for snowy escapades.

Sledding

Sledding is available at Tūroa and Whakapapa ski areas! At Tūroa ski field the kids Yeti snow play zone is located on the Alpine Meadow, at Whakapapa ski field you'll find the sledding area in Happy Valley. The snow in both areas is specifically groomed for your enjoyment! Everything is included in the pass you purchase at these Ruapehu ski areas; all you need to do is grab your sled, zoom down the track, hop on the magic carpet, and make your way back to the top of the sledding area.

Pro Tip: At both Tūroa and Whakapapa ski fields, there are only a limited number of spots available and it is prone to selling out quickly! To avoid disappointment, make sure you book your snow slot early.

*Please note: Guests need to be 8 years of age or older, to be able to ride in the sled by themselves.  You cannot bring your own sled into the sledding area.

Snow Play Zone

Looking for a place to play in the snow or challenge your friends or family to a friendly snowball fight? At Whakapapa ski area, access to the lift facilities requires a valid pass, and participation in skiing, snowboarding, or sledding is necessary for slope entry. For safety reasons, pedestrian traffic is not permitted on the trails. As the Ruapehu winter season progresses and snow accumulates, a compact snow experience zone will emerge at the summit of the Sky Waka gondola at Whakapapa, accessible with a sightseeing pass. Weather permitting, there may be snow around the plaza area, providing a safe environment for children to play.
