Step Back in Time with Te Ara nā Te Kōtuku

Ngāti Hāua Taumarunui, in partnership with the Taumarunui-Ohura Community Board and Ruapehu District, has brought the Taumarunui Story Trail to life—an immersive, interactive experience that shares the stories, voices, and heritage of the region.

The trail invites visitors to explore the township through a self-guided digital walking tour. By scanning a QR code at one of the seven story markers placed around town, you’ll gain access to:

  • Videos of historical kōrero pertaining to Ngāti Hāua

  • 360° augmented reality visuals

  • Written narratives and rich local history

  • Wayfinder beacons guiding you to significant sites

  • Digital storytelling that brings Taumarunui’s evolution to life

This is only Phase 1 of an ongoing project that connects the past with the present through modern technology and local knowledge.

Ngāti Hāua’s deep connection to the whenua has shaped this unique journey through Taumarunui, offering visitors a chance to engage with the history and identity of the Ruapehu region.
