Te Hangāruru

Te Hangāruru Trail is a new off-road walking and cycling trail connecting Horopito to National Park Village through the Waimarino. Rich in history, ecology, and cultural significance, the trail weaves through native forest, historic railway sites, and the proposed Pōkākā ecosanctuary. Once complete, it will form a key part of the Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono network.

Overview

Te Hangāruru, gifted by Te Korowai o Wainuiārua, is a trail rich in history, ecology, and cultural connection. Its name recalls a time when native birds like kākā filled the skies above the Waimarino, drawn to the towering Pōkākā trees and abundant ngahere (forest). This land was once a vital gathering place for mana whenua — a corridor between Manganui o te Ao and Tokaanu, alive with hunting, harvesting, and community.

Today, Te Hangāruru honours that legacy. Winding through regenerating forest, alpine wetlands, and historic tramway routes, the trail invites riders and walkers to reconnect with the whenua, its stories, and its future. It’s a taonga — a treasure shaped by partnership, resilience, and kaitiakitanga.

Trail Experience

Te Hangāruru currently spans 9.1km from Horopito to Pōkākā Road, with shuttle options available at both ends. This Grade 2 trail is suitable for most abilities and offers a gentle, immersive ride or walk through the heart of the Waimarino.

Highlights include:

  • Two spectacular suspension bridges, including a dramatic crossing above the Mangaturuturu River
  • Regenerating native forest and alpine wetlands teeming with birdlife
  • Historic tramway remnants and a railway underpass beneath the North Island Main Trunk Line
  • A striking man-made waterfall created by the Deep Creek diversion
  • Views to Mt Ruapehu and storytelling panels at the Horopito Hub
  • Future connection to The Last Spike and the Marton Sash and Door tramway

The trail is designed to be explored in either direction, with opportunities to return the same way or exit via side trails. It’s a half-day adventure that blends nature, history, and cultural insight — perfect for families, explorers, and anyone seeking a deeper connection to the land.

Project Background

Te Hangāruru is part of the Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono Great Ride and represents a collaborative effort between:

  • Ruapehu District Council
  • Te Korowai o Wainuiārua
  • Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) – Kānoa fund
  • Local iwi and community partners

Stage One began construction in October 2023, with the full trail set to link Horopito to Waimarino – National Park Village. Once complete, it will form a vital connection across the region, supporting ecological restoration, cultural storytelling, and sustainable tourism.

Walk or ride with care and reverence. This is a journey through living history — a pathway shaped by nature, memory, and mana.
