Overview
Te Hangāruru, gifted by Te Korowai o Wainuiārua, speaks to a story of abundance and connection. The name refers to a time when the skies above the Waimarino were filled with native birds — so numerous that their wings darkened the sky. This region, rich with native trees and natural resources, was a vital gathering place for mana whenua, a place to hunt, harvest, and traverse between settlements like Manganui o te Ao and Tokaanu.
Today, the Te Hangāruru trail seeks to honour that legacy. Once complete, it will form a vibrant connection through the heart of the Waimarino, supporting both community and environment, and reconnecting people with the landscape and stories of this extraordinary place.
Trail Experience
The trail spans approximately 29.4km, taking cyclists and walkers through the spectacular Waimarino landscape. Starting at Horopito, it winds across historic viaducts and follows the path of the old State Highway (now Matapuna Road), weaving through lush bush, streams, and the proposed alpine Pōkākā ecosanctuary — a future haven for native flora and fauna.
Key highlights along the trail include:
-
The Last Spike – the historic final link in the North Island Main Trunk Line
-
Suspension bridges and restored heritage features
-
Connection to the Marton Sash and Door tramway at Erua
-
Cultural and ecological reconnection for iwi and visitors alike
At its southern end, the trail leads to Waimarino – National Park Village, completing a crucial missing link in the Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono trail network.
