Walking & Hiking

With forest reserves, conservation areas and two major National Parks, the Ruapehu region is New Zealand's premier walking and hiking destination.

Whether you are a seasoned hiker with all the gears, or you and the family want to take a short walk in a National Park before settling somewhere with a few and a cold drink, Ruapehu has a huge range of spectacular walks available all within easy driving distance of any of our key towns and villages.

If you are attempting some of the longer walks in the region, such as Lake Surprise, Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and some of the Round the Mountain track you will need full alpine equipment and clothing, we'd recommend a guide in winter.

If you're looking for short walks in and around the area there are plenty of covered bush tracks which are perfect for a rainy day. Rug up warm, and take some food and water with you, and always let someone know where you're going and when you'll be back.

Have a look at our Walking & Hiking section, and download the DOC walking guide for the Tongariro National Park as a good point of reference.
