The Tangiwai Memorial Park is a fitting place of remembrance for the tragic 1953 event

Late on Christmas Eve in 1953 the Wellington to Auckland night train plunged into the Whangaehu River at Tangiwai, following a large lahar from Mount Ruapehu. Of the 285 passengers and crew on board, 151 died in New Zealand’s worst railway accident.

The park has a stunning memorial and also a walking track and viewing area.
