Discover the volcanic history of Mt Ruapehu on this off track hike down the lahar path.

Look at paths from the ancient Rangipo mega lahars, and the more recent (1995, 2007 x 2) lahar activity down the Whangaehu and at the site of the Bund (man-made barrier). Also make stops at the charred forest created by the Taupo blast.


Trip Length: 7 hours including travel to and from Turangi
Minimum Age: 10

Maximum Participants: 30. Minimum 5 participants for trip to proceed.

Meeting Place: Parking lot behind the Mustard Seed Café, Turangi, or at a place pre-arranged with the trip leader

Transport: Own

Cost: Koha

The trip may be cancelled or postponed due to poor weather. The postponement date is Friday 7th Jan 2022. Other conditions for cancellation/postponement include COVID alert level changes.

PARTICIPANTS ARE ASKED TO BRING THE FOLLOWING:

  • Waterproof and warm clothing

  • Packed lunch and water

  • Tramping boots

  • Sunglasses/sunscreen/sunhat

  • Gloves and a warm hat

  • Snacks and drinks

  • Personal first aid kit

  • Personal medication

  • Camera (optional)
