Hillary Outdoors staff will guide you through an underground stream, wade through water and discover glow worms, lime stone and more!

Experience the stillness of this underground world and squeeze through gaps via the glow of torchlight.

Suitable for people with average fitness and reasonable health. Includes moving through confined spaces, getting wet to at least knee height, and crawling through shallow water.


Trip Length: Approx 3 Hours (There are two trips taking place on the 14 January, one in the morning starting at 8:45 am, and one in the afternoon starting at 11:45 am. You will be prompted to choose which option you would like when you book)
Minimum Age: 7 Years
Maximum Participants: 10 (A minimum of 5 people per trip are needed for trips to proceed, otherwise booked people will be refunded)
Meeting Place: Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre, Whakapapa Village
Transport: Own - Personal vehicles - must have a high wheelbase. 4WD vehicles are preferred, but a 2WD with high clearance is acceptable. We will encourage carpooling to minimise the number of vehicles and road safety risks.
Cost: $20pp

May be cancelled/postponed due to river flow in the cave. Other criteria for postponement / cancelling include COVID alert level increase.

PARTICIPANTS ARE ASKED TO BRING THE FOLLOWING:

  • Water & windproof & warm clothing (clothing will get dirty)

  • Raincoat

  • Packed lunch and water

  • Tramping/Sturdy boots

  • Torch and spare batteries - you will not be allowed into the cave without a torch

  • Bicycle helmet - you will not be allowed into the cave without a helmet

  • Dry shoes and spare clothes for afterwards

  • Sunglasses / sunscreen / sunhat

  • Gloves and warm hat

  • Snacks and drinks

  • Personal first aid kit

  • Personal medication

  • Camera (optional)

Please note: If you are adequately equipped, activities will be enjoyable, otherwise, they can be cold and miserable. The Trip Leader reserves the right to refuse anyone who is insufficiently equipped.
