Walking & Hiking

With forest reserves, conservation areas and two major National Parks, the Ruapehu region is New Zealand's premier walking and hiking destination.

From short family-friendly walks to more challenging day walks such as Lake Surprise, Crater Lake Hike or the world famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, through to multi day classic journeys like the Round the Mountain track or Tongariro Northern Circuit and Whanganui Journey, there is a piece of nature with your name on it here in the Ruapehu region.

Getting Here

The Ruapehu region is located in the centre of New Zealand's North Island halfway between Auckland and Wellington - both less than 4 hours drive.

Kiwirail operates scenic rail services between Auckland and Wellington, with stops at National Park Village and Ohakune, and national bus operators offer daily services to the area. Closest airports are Taupo, Whanganui and Palmerston North.
