We know time is limited and with so much variety on offer, we’ve come up with a few suggestions that we think are must do’s during your stay in the Ruapehu region.

Do something new

Have you ever hiked to the crater of a volcano,ridden a railcart or railbike along 150kms of decommissioned railway,  taken a 4WD off-road through hundreds of acres overlooking a national park, tried stand-up paddleboarding on a secluded lake with the majestic volcanic mountains of the central plateau as your backdrop? Have you ever touched snow, learnt to ski, ridden a bike, a horse...it really is all easily accessible in the Ruapehu region.

Take a hike

Home to a multitude of internationally recognised walks, hikes and treks, the Tongariro National Park World Heritage site, the Whanganui National Park and the Pureora Forest Park provide a veritable smorgasbord of options for all levels of walkers and hikers. From the 19km Tongariro Alpine Crossing to a 15 minute stroll in the Tongariro National Park with family head to the Ruapehu region any time of the year for your nature fix.

On your bike

On your own bike or a hired machine the Ruapehu region has a multitude of cycle trails to fit all levels. Try family favourites Ohakune Old Coach Road or Fishers Track, or head out on an excursion along the stunning Timber Trail or Mountains to Sea trails.

Take some time

Proudly home to both the Tongariro National Park and the Whanganui National Park make sure you give yourself some time to switch off and enjoy the stunning gift of nature around you in the Ruapehu region. Listen to the birds, breathe in the fresh alpine air, take in the volcanic masterpieces around you. Grab yourself a world class coffee and fresh local cuisine to accompany the moment.
