Cycling & Mountain Biking

The opportunities for mountain biking in the Ruapehu region abound with numerous trails easily accessible from any of the towns & villages of the region.

Whether you are a first timer or downhill demon, there are trails to suit in and around the Tongariro National Park and Whanganui National Park. The Ruapehu region is proudly home to two of the New Zealand Cycleways Great Rides with the Timber Trail and the Mountains to Sea - Nga Ara Tuhono.
Set in amongst the diverse and spectacular central North Island terrain, there are also a number of other serviced cycleways including: the 42 Traverse,  Fishers TrackOhakune Old Coach Road and more.

Getting Here

The Ruapehu region is located in the centre of New Zealand's North Island halfway between Auckland and Wellington - both less than 4 hours drive.

Kiwirail operates scenic rail services between Auckland and Wellington, with stops at National Park Village and Ohakune, and national bus operators offer daily services to the area. Closest airports are Taupo, Whanganui and Palmerston North.
