Four Wheel Driving
Ruapehu has some great places for four-wheel driving. Whether you use your vehicle to get to your favourite camping or fishing spot, or to view the scenery and enjoy, there are many different places to choose from.
Enjoy but take care. If not driven carefully it's easy to damage fragile landscapes. It's essential that everyone using 4WDs, trail bikes, and other types of vehicles know how to drive with care for the environment and other recreationists.

If you are looking for a laid back and unique game of golf then look no further. Three outstanding courses exist right here in the Ruapehu district.
Waimarino Golf Club is located in the heart of the Ruapehu district, just five minutes drive from Ohakune town centre. This is one of the highest rating golf courses in the Manawatu-Wanganui area.
Taumarunui hosts the Tarrangower Golf Course, one of New Zealand’s top 50.
Whakapapa Village is home to New Zealand’s highest golf course. Situated within New Zealand's only dual World Heritage area; Tongariro National Park, and conveniently based at the doorstep of the Chateau Tongariro, this 9 hole golf course caters for the whole family.
The extensive bush and forest in Ruapehu District is home to wild goat, turkey, pig, red stag and fallow deer where fair chase and free range hunting is available. For more information click here.
Horse Riding and Trekking
Horses have a long history in Ruapehu from early European times when pack horses were an essential part of high country travel. Today horses are still popular but more so for sport and pleasure. As well as sharing their love and passion for these noble beasts there are operators in the region that will share the special forests, bush and stories that make Ruapehu special.
Ohakune has recently seen the addition of an indoor skate park. The park is set to officially open in April 2013.
