Jet boating on the Whanganui River is not so much a “thrills and spills” experience but a fast and efficient way to traverse the length of this mystical river.
Guided tours include the Bridge to Nowhere, Nukunuku Museum and the Niu poles in the upper reaches and the River Queen movie locations. Short scenic tours can also be tailor-made to suit your needs.
The main pick-up points are Pipiriki and Whakahoro, but operators can provide or arrange pick-up and drop-off services from main towns and villages. Operators also provide river transport to or from walks in the Whanganui National Park.
Visitors should note that while travelling in a jet boat is an efficient and fun way to travel, the wind chill factor is somewhat higher than in a canoe. A warm hat, scarf (and sunglasses for those in the front seat!) is worthwhile considering.
