Celebrate Matariki in Ruapehu: Unmissable Events and Adventures

As the Māori New Year approaches, Aotearoa gears up to celebrate the awe-inspiring Matariki, or what is called Puanga in South Ruapehu. Puanga is the Whanganui, Taranaki, and Ruapehu regions tohu (sign) of the new year. This tradition marks the arrival of a new season and provides an opportunity for communities to come together, reflect, and embark on memorable adventures. Ruapehu hosts an array of captivating Puanga events, offering a perfect blend of cultural immersion and exciting experiences. Let's dive into the remarkable Puanga celebrations taking place in Ruapehu this year.

Puanga is the brightest star in the constellation of Orion. In the late fall and early winter night sky, Matariki can be seen below Puanga and to the left of Tautoru (the three stars of Orion's Belt). Puanga is the star that is visible in the Whanganui and Ruapehu regions and is celebrated from the 18th of June until the 18th of July 2023.
